Lalitpur Town Area to be made model town of handicraft
Lalitpur, March 17: Lalitpur town area, one of the ancient towns in the Kathmandu Valley, is to be made a model town for handicraft.
At a programme organized by Lalitpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry at Lalitpur on Thursday to mark its 49th anniversary, Minister for Commerce Deepak Bohara said that the tourism in Lalitpur would not foster if the town is not declared a model town for handicraft as the town had many artisans well versed with handicraft.
Minister Bohara argued that in order to ink a steadfast trade agreement with Bhutan, a special committee comprising entrepreneurs could be set up on the behalf of the government for the same.
Similarly, Vice-President of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) Bhawani Rana pledge that the entrepreneurs were ready to invest in any sector provided the government helped create investment-friendly climate.
Likewise, Fubu Tshering, Secretary-General of the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that he was highly impressed by Nepal making strides in the agriculture sector
Fifteen TU student unions demand trained teachers
Fifteen student unions affiliated to ruling and opposition parties on Friday asked Tribhuvan University to train its teachers claiming that many of them are not proficient to teach students under the newly-introduced semester system.
Submitting a memorandum to TU Vice-Chancellor Hira Bahadur Maharjan, 15 student unions demanded the university should first focus on training its human resources and cut tuition and entrance fees under the new system.
The university charges around Rs 20,000 as tuition and Rs 1,000 as entrance fee for the semester system.
Ashesh Ghimire, Publicity Department chief of the CPN-UML-affiliated All Nepal National Free Student Union, said as the semester system is more practical-based and has emphasized English-medium classes, many TU lecturers are yet to adapt to the change. The oldest varsity in the country introduced semester system from its 38 central departments last year in an effort to improve quality. Starting this year, TU has expanded the new system to all of its constituent colleges in the Capital and plans to implement it gradually in all of its constituent and affiliated colleges across the country. Currently, TU has 61 constituent colleges and 1,111 affiliate colleges with around half a million students. One third of these students and colleges are in the Capital. Unlike in the previous annual system, students willing to study under the semester system must take entrance test and mandatorily take all exams in English medium.
The students unions were against the new system from the very beginning saying that it will make education costlier and become inaccessible to students from poor financial background.
The 15-union alliance has also demanded that academic calendar be followed and results be published within four months after examination. It also asked VC Maharjan to immediately declare dates for the Free Student Union election.
The biennial election has not been held for last six years and was cancelled twice earlier owing to dispute between among unions regarding the examination modality. Citing a Supreme Court verdict which asked the university to conduct the election at
the earliest, the unions demanded that the election calendar must be published within this year.
